Dó paper (or ”mulberry paper") is a paper made from the inner bark of the dó tree and traditionally produced in many villages in Vietnam. It plays an important role in folk art. But it's an old story.
Doan “has blown a breath” of contemporary art into traditional materials in his unique way.
Doan depicts life crammed in a bathroom, in a pool, in a cabinet, in a bus… - the contrast between these narrow spaces and the patches of human figures makes us curious about the consciousness of the people around us.
(*) About other material: Joss paper, as well as other papier-mâché items, are also burned or buried in various Asian funerals, "to ensure that the spirit of the deceased has sufficient means in the after-life”
